What are the most romantic restaurants in Roatan?
It depends on the evening you have in mind. For a dress-up dinner by the water, West Bay has Luna Muna at Ibagari, Alera at the Kimpton Grand Roatan and Sea Salt. In West End, Mila del Mar looks out over Half Moon Bay, and, off the strip at Luna Beach, The Chef's Table serves dry-aged steaks in a speakeasy room or up on the rooftop. For something smaller and quieter, Roatan Oasis serves dinner by candlelight in its garden. And for a night that feels like an adventure, take the boat across to Azure at Barefoot Cay, or watch the sunset from high above the island at From the Roots.
Roatan does romance without trying very hard: the sun sets over the water on the west side of the island, and a lot of the good restaurants are built to face it. We built this list from the places couples and reviewers mention again and again for anniversaries, proposals and date nights, grouped by area so you can plan around where you are staying.
Romantic restaurants in West Bay
Luna Muna at Ibagari
The one people mean when they say the most romantic dinner on the island. An open-air room by the water at Ibagari, just outside the West Bay beach resorts, lit by fire torches, with a tree growing up through the floor. Honduran ingredients through Asian and Italian technique: conch carpaccio, tuna tataki, citrus lobster risotto. On Fridays, Ibagari puts on a Garifuna show at 7pm, and there is live music on Saturday evenings. Reservations are strongly suggested, especially for sunset.
Alera at the Kimpton Grand Roatan
The Kimpton's signature restaurant: Mediterranean technique and Caribbean ingredients, a serious wine list, candles, and the water a few steps away. In our experience it is the easiest dinner on the island to get right for an anniversary, because the service and the room do the work for you. The resort also runs the Green Flash Table, a six to eight-course tasting menu timed to the sunset. For a drink on the sand first, Sea Cat is the resort's beach bar, with frozen drinks and surf shack bites.
Sea Salt
An oceanside, boutique restaurant a short drive from the West Bay beach resorts, and one of the most refined kitchens on the island, seafood-led and beautifully plated. Seating is on a small deck by the water, and this is a dinner you dress for. Reviewers' favorites are the tuna tartare, the grilled octopus, the black snapper and the pineapple "ravioli". It comes into its own after dark, when the pool lights come up and the heat lets go of the day, so book for just after sunset.
Lotus at Xbalanque
Barefoot rather than formal. Tables beside an infinity pool over the sea and out on the dock, torches along the path, and the sky doing the work at dusk. The menu changes with the seasons and leans on local seafood. Ask for a dock table when you book.
Ahari at Arca
Beachfront at Arca, modern and bohemian at once, with a covered deck, beach seating and live music on some nights. Caribbean fusion from a menu built on local ingredients; reviewers' favorites are the skirt steak, the chicken roulade and a well-made old fashioned. It takes outside bookings on OpenTable, and the dress code is casual.
Gula Gastro Bar and Winery at Henry Morgan
Italian and Mediterranean cooking at the Henry Morgan resort in West Bay, with a nice wine selection, all sold by the bottle. If you are driving, you walk through the Henry Morgan to get there. The beachside tables are casual; for a date, ask for a table upstairs in the wine room, the quieter and more intimate side of the restaurant. Reviewers' favorites are the lobster pasta, the gnocchi bolognese, the lasagna and the tasting menu.
Romantic restaurants in West End
Mila del Mar at the Beach House
On the second floor of the Beach House, looking out over Half Moon Bay, with private dinners on the dock by arrangement. A small room, a serious wine list and staff who leave you alone at the right moments. Reviewers' favorites are the poke bowl, the tuna and the lobster and scallop risotto, and around 7pm tarpon gather at the dock. There is no dedicated parking; the closest is at Coconut Tree Plaza on the main road.
Roatan Oasis
On the main road just outside West End, set in a garden with hanging lights, timber and open sides. International fusion on a menu that changes often; the favorites are the chipotle-glazed ribs, the squid ink pasta with seafood and the seared tuna. Save room, because the desserts are to die for. It serves dinner only on certain nights, so check its current days before you plan around it.
The Chef's Table at Luna Beach
A steakhouse hidden inside Luna Beach Luxury Boutique Resort, a short drive from the West End strip, styled after a 1920s speakeasy with velvet, warm wood and brass. Dry-aged steaks alongside seasonal Caribbean seafood and craft cocktails, in the air-conditioned dining room or up on the rooftop overlooking the sea. Book ahead, although walk-ins are taken when there is space.
Luna Beach Bar and Grill
Beachfront at Luna Beach, in West End but off the strip: you can walk there along the beach from the far end of the village, though most people drive. A table where the setting does a good deal of the work. Grill-led, relaxed and right next to the water. Book ahead, ask for a table by the ocean, and come for sunset.
Silversides
A restaurant and bar overlooking Half Moon Bay that calls itself casual fine dining. Rather nice bar seating, house-made ginger beer for the Moscow mule, and reviewers' favorites of the snapper, the seafood board and an espresso martini, with the dessert board to share. There is no dedicated parking; the closest is at Coconut Tree Plaza on the main road.
Argentinian Grill
At Hotel Posada Arco Iris on Half Moon Bay, with a handful of tables on a platform right over the beach, lit by lanterns as the sun goes down. Order a steak or the whole grilled snapper, with a bottle from the Malbec list. There are only a few beachside tables, so book or arrive early and ask for one.
Worth the drive
Azure at Barefoot Cay, Brick Bay
The restaurant at Barefoot Cay sits on a small cay, and you reach it by a short boat ride across the channel, which sets the tone before you sit down. There is an indoor dining room, a patio by the water and a firepit. Contemporary international cooking with Caribbean roots; reviewers' favorites are the tuna tartare, the baby octopus salad, the dill snapper and the key lime pie. It is open to the public and books on OpenTable, with parking at the resort.
From the Roots at Spirit Origin, First Bight
Near the entrance to Parrot Tree, at one of the highest viewpoints on the island, with a Sunset Deck and a SkyDeck looking out over the sea. Refined Caribbean cooking with Honduran ingredients, beside a working coffee roastery. Reviewers' favorites are the pappardelle with lamb ragù, the coffee-adobo beef tenderloin and an espresso martini. Book a table for sunset.
The Sunken Fish at Tranquilseas, Sandy Bay
Up in the trees at Tranquilseas, with a sea view from the tables and one of the best sunset terraces on the island. Caribbean and international cooking, with their own bread and pasta; reviewers' favorites are the octopus and the tuna tiradito. Quieter than the West Bay rooms and a short drive from West End.
Which romantic restaurant in Roatan should you choose?
For the most memorable setting, Luna Muna, on a Friday if you want the Garifuna show. For a classic anniversary dinner with polished service, Alera, or Sea Salt for the most refined seafood. If you are staying in West End and want to walk to dinner, Mila del Mar for the view over Half Moon Bay, Roatan Oasis for candlelight, or the Argentinian Grill for a table on the beach. For an evening that feels like an outing, Azure by boat or From the Roots for the view.
What time is sunset in Roatan?
Between about 5:10pm, at its earliest in late November, and about 6:20pm, at its latest in early July, so it moves by more than an hour across the year. Book a table for half an hour before sunset if you want to see it from your seat, and check our sunset page for the exact time on your dates. West-facing tables in West Bay, Sandy Bay and West End get the best of it.
Common questions about romantic dining in Roatan
Do you need reservations for romantic restaurants in Roatan?
For almost all of these, book. They are small rooms and the island is busiest from December to April. Luna Muna strongly suggests reservations, especially for sunset, and the Argentinian Grill has only a few beachside tables. Alera, Ahari, Azure, The Chef's Table and From the Roots all take bookings on OpenTable. If sunset matters, ask for a west-facing table at Lotus, Mila del Mar or the Argentinian Grill when you book.
Where can you have a romantic dinner by the water in Roatan?
In West Bay, Luna Muna is open-air by the water, Sea Salt seats you on a small deck by the sea, Lotus has tables by an infinity pool and on its dock, and Ahari is on the beach. In West End, the Argentinian Grill has tables on a platform over the beach, Luna Beach Bar and Grill is right next to the water, and Mila del Mar looks out over Half Moon Bay and can set up a private dinner on its dock. Azure, in Brick Bay, is reached by boat.
What is the best restaurant in Roatan for an anniversary or proposal?
For the setting, Luna Muna at Ibagari, with fire torches, a tree through the floor and the sea beyond. For polished service and a dress-up evening, Alera at the Kimpton Grand Roatan, or its Green Flash Table tasting menu at sunset. For something intimate, a candlelit garden table at Roatan Oasis in West End. For a proposal by the water, ask Mila del Mar about a private dinner on its dock. Tell the restaurant when you book; small rooms here are good at making an evening feel personal.
Is West End or West Bay better for a romantic dinner?
West Bay has the resort restaurants, with pools, beachfront decks and polished service: Luna Muna, Alera, Sea Salt, Lotus, Ahari and Gula. West End has smaller, more personal rooms you can walk between on the strip: Mila del Mar, Silversides and the Argentinian Grill, with Roatan Oasis on the main road just outside the village and Luna Beach a short drive from the strip. If you are staying in West Bay, arrange a taxi back from West End or Sandy Bay, because they are not within walking distance at night.
How much does a romantic dinner in Roatan cost?
Most of these restaurants do not publish full prices online, so we do not quote a figure for two. The resort restaurants in West Bay, such as Luna Muna, Alera and Sea Salt, sit at the top of the island's range, and special menus like the Green Flash Table cost more again. The West End rooms are generally less expensive than the West Bay resorts. Ask whether service is included when the bill comes.
