West End vs West Bay: which side of Roatan to stay on

Ten minutes apart and two very different trips: which side to base yourself on, what the beach really looks like in each, and Sandy Bay, the third option most guides leave out.

West End or West Bay: which should you stay in?

West Bay if the beach is the point of the trip. West End if the diving and the evenings are. They sit ten minutes apart at the western tip of the island and they are not variations on a theme, they are different vacations.

The short version: West Bay is a wide arc of white sand with resorts on it and a reef you can swim to from the beach. West End is a village strung along one street, full of dive shops and places to eat and drink, with only small patches of sand. Most people who get this wrong are the ones who booked West End expecting a West Bay type beach.

West End and West Bay compared

What matters West End West Bay
The beach Half Moon Bay and a few smaller sandy stretches. A lot of the shoreline is ironshore, dock or sea wall A wide arc of white sand, often considered the best beach on the island
Shore snorkeling Yes, at Half Moon Bay and the Blue Channel; most boat trips also leave from here The reef is swimmable from the sand, no boat needed
Diving The island's dive capital. The largest concentration of dive shops on Roatan Fewer operators, but the same reef, with dive shops at the Kimpton Grand Roatan, Infinity Bay, Mayan Princess and Las Rocas
Eating out The widest choice on the island, at every price Mostly resort restaurants, fewer independents
Evenings Bars, music, people out late Quieter. Mostly dinner where you are staying or at a nearby resort
Cruise days Busy, but the village absorbs it The beach and the water fill up while the ships are in
Getting around Walkable end to end Walkable, resort hopping along the beach
Budget Far more budget-friendly places to stay and eat, alongside the boutique hotels Mostly resorts, condos and vacation rentals, with the beach priced in
Who it suits Divers, solo travelers, anyone who wants somewhere with a pulse Families, honeymooners, and anyone who wants to spend most of the trip on the beach

One thing to get straight before you choose. West End and West Bay sit on the same stretch of reef, so you are not picking better or worse diving, you are picking how many operators are on your doorstep and what the place feels like in the evening. Anyone who tells you the diving is worse in West Bay is confusing the number of dive shops with the quality of the water.

What is West Bay like?

It is the beach everyone has seen in the photographs, and the photographs are honest. A wide arc of white sand and clear water, regularly named by travel magazines as one of the Caribbean's best.

This is the resort side. Infinity Bay, the Kimpton Grand Roatan, the Mayan Princess, condos, vacation rentals, umbrella service, a pool if you want one. You can walk out of your room onto the sand, which sounds like a small thing and is not, particularly with children.

The snorkeling and the luxurious beach access are the strongest arguments for staying here. The reef sits close enough to swim to from the beach, with no boat and no tour, which few other beaches on the island offer. Several of the resorts run their own dive shops, so you can dive from here perfectly well.

Plan around cruise days. While the ships are in, the beach and the water fill up and the boat traffic increases, and on a three-ship day it is a different place entirely. Check the cruise schedule before you book, and if you are staying a week it will not be every day. West Bay is also quieter at night, so for a wider choice of restaurants and somewhere to go afterwards, take a taxi over to West End.

What is West End like?

Ten minutes up the coast, with a completely different feel. One main road, the strip, running along the water, lined with dive shops, casual restaurants, street food, bars and small hotels. Locals, dive instructors, backpackers and expats, in a village rather than a resort.

Be clear about the beach, because this is where people get caught out. There is sand in West End, at Half Moon Bay and in smaller patches along the front, but a lot of the shoreline is ironshore, dock or sea wall. There is not a long continuous stretch to lie on. You can jump in the water in front of Sundowners, and you will see people swimming in front of Bean Crazy, so it is possible, but if a true beach day every day is the plan, this might not be the right fit. If you want to be somewhere with a pulse, it is the obvious choice.

This is the island's dive capital. It holds the largest concentration of dive shops on Roatan, running Open Water courses, advanced training and daily boat trips, and the competition keeps prices keen. If you are here to dive, or to learn, stay here.

It is also where you will find the most places to eat, from street food to sit-down restaurants. See our guide to eating in West End, street food included. Most of the island's fine dining sits toward West Bay, but West End has solid options too, like Mila del Mar and Fogo da Baia; our fine dining guide covers both sides.

What about Sandy Bay?

The option most guides leave out, and worth knowing about if neither of the other two quite fits.

Sandy Bay sits east of West End, on the road toward the airport. It is quieter than both, generally cheaper than West Bay, and it has a real spread of places to stay: Anthony's Key Resort, which is an institution and runs its own diving, smaller places like Puerta Azul, Tranquilseas, Blue Bahia and Guava Grove, and a long-running backpacker hostel. It is also a popular area for renting a house if you are traveling as a family and would rather have a whole place to yourselves.

What you get is calm, reef access and more room for your money. What you give up is West Bay's beach and the West End strip. Some properties have a restaurant on site, but you will not have thirty restaurants outside your door, and you will most likely need a car more than you would in West End or West Bay.

It also has a hyperbaric chamber, at Anthony's Key, run by Cornerstone, and Clinica Esperanza. That matters to divers more than to anyone else.

How do you get between West End and West Bay?

Two ways, and the boat is usually the better one.

The water taxi runs between West End and the beach at West Bay. About ten minutes, and about $3 to $5 a person, though a party of one or two can pay more. It is a nice ride along the island, and it stops in the evening, which is the thing to plan around.

A road taxi costs between $10 and $20, and private hotel transport between $20 and $30 each way. After dark, a taxi, hotel transport or your own car is the way to get between West Bay and West End. Agree the fare before you get in, as always.

If you are feeling sporty, walking between them in daylight is possible, and plenty of people have done it, but it takes from 45 minutes to the better part of an hour, depending on your pace and the tide. Allow more time than you think, and wear something on your feet.

Which is better for families?

West Bay, in most cases. The beach is calm and shallow in places, the resorts are self-contained, and being able to go from room to sand without organizing transport is worth a great deal with small children; the snorkeling from the beach keeps older children occupied for days. West End works for families with teenagers who want to dive, and it is generally cheaper, but you will be managing a street with traffic on it rather than a stretch of beach.

Which is better for diving?

West End, for choice rather than for water. Both sides reach the same stretch of reef, and which sites you dive on a given day depends on the shop and the wind rather than on where you sleep. What West End gives you is the largest concentration of shops on the island, which means more boats, more departure times, more course availability and keener prices.

You can dive perfectly well from West Bay, where the Kimpton Grand Roatan, Infinity Bay, Mayan Princess and Las Rocas all have dive shops on site, and from Sandy Bay, where Anthony's Key is a serious dive resort in its own right.

One practical note: if you are doing a course over several days, staying walking distance from your dive shop is worth more than the beach outside your room.

Which should you pick for a first trip?

If you have never been and you are coming for a week, West Bay. It is the lower-risk choice: the beach delivers, the logistics are simple, and West End is ten minutes away whenever you want it. Staying in West End and discovering you wanted a beach is the harder mistake to undo. If you are coming to dive, ignore all of that and stay in West End, within walking distance of your shop.

Should you split your stay?

Often the right answer, and easier than it sounds given they are ten minutes apart.

The usual split is two or three nights in West End at the start, while you are diving and going out in the evenings, then moving to West Bay to slow down. Doing it in that order is deliberate: the beach is a better place to end a trip than to start one, and you will have got the island out of your system first.

The cost is one morning spent changing hotels. If you are here for less than five nights, do not bother. Pick one.

Common questions about West End and West Bay

Is West End or West Bay better?

Neither is better outright, they suit different trips. West Bay has the beach, the resorts and shore snorkeling, and suits families and anyone who wants to spend most of the trip on the beach. West End has the dive shops, the restaurants and the evenings, and suits divers, solo travelers and people who want somewhere that feels lived in. The common mistake is booking West End expecting a beach.

Does West End have a beach?

Some, but not much. Half Moon Bay is a small crescent of sand at the northern end and there are smaller patches along the front, but a great deal of the West End shoreline is ironshore, dock or sea wall rather than sand. There is water access and there is snorkeling, but no long stretch to lie on. If a beach is the point of the trip, stay in West Bay.

How far is West End from West Bay?

About ten minutes by water taxi, at about $3 to $5 a person, or a similar time by road taxi at $10 to $20, with private hotel transport at $20 to $30 each way. You can walk it in daylight if you are feeling sporty, though it takes from 45 minutes to the better part of an hour depending on your pace and the tide. After dark, take a taxi, hotel transport or your own car.

Is West Bay crowded?

While cruise ships are in, yes. Both the beach and the water fill up for the hours the ships are docked, typically late morning through mid afternoon. Outside those hours, and on days with no ships in, it is far quieter, though West Bay Beach in high season is never empty. The island takes cruise traffic most weeks, so check the cruise schedule against your dates rather than assuming either way, and plan beach mornings early.

Is the diving better in West End or West Bay?

The reef is the same. Both sides access the same stretch of it, so you are not choosing between better and worse water, only between the sites each shop happens to run that day. What differs is the number of operators: West End has by far the most dive shops, which means more boats, more departure times and keener prices. In West Bay, the Kimpton Grand Roatan, Infinity Bay, Mayan Princess and Las Rocas all have dive shops on site, and Anthony's Key in Sandy Bay is a dive resort in its own right.

Is West End or West Bay cheaper?

West End, as a rule. It is a village of small hotels, guesthouses and dive-shop rooms with restaurants at every price, while West Bay is resorts, condos and vacation rentals on what is often considered the island's best beach, and the beach is priced in. The gap narrows in low season and widens in winter and at Semana Santa. Sandy Bay, between West End and the airport, is generally cheaper than West Bay again. We do not publish room rates here because they move too fast to trust.

Is Sandy Bay a good place to stay in Roatan?

Yes, if you want quiet and value over a strip of restaurants outside your door. It sits between West End and the airport, generally costs less than West Bay, and ranges from Anthony's Key Resort to small boutique places like Puerta Azul and Tranquilseas, plus a long-running hostel. Some properties have a restaurant on site, but you will most likely want a car. It is a popular area for renting a house as a family, and it has a hyperbaric chamber, at Anthony's Key, and Clinica Esperanza.
