Where to stay in Roatan: the best luxury resorts and boutique hotels

Eight properties at the top end of the island, what each is actually for, and the age limits that catch families out.

Where should you stay in Roatan for luxury?

For the best full-service resort on the island, the Kimpton Grand Roatan on West Bay Beach. For private space, a full kitchen and the best view, the Arihini apartments near the West Bay lighthouse. For a quiet, design-led boutique hotel with serious diving, Ibagari, between West Bay and West End. For a small, grown-up beach hotel, Arca, in the middle of West Bay Beach. For a condo with a kitchen on the sand, Infinity Bay, and for an all-inclusive family dive resort, Mayan Princess, both on West Bay Beach. For a beachfront room right on the West End strip, the Beach House on Half Moon Bay. And for nature and seclusion on the East End, Paya Bay.

This is the top end of Roatan: eight properties, not a survey of the island. West Bay has plenty of good hotels at every price. What follows is the handful where the money buys something genuinely different rather than just a better room, and they differ far more than the photographs suggest. The same spend gets you a 122-room resort with four restaurants, a dive hotel with its own PADI center, or an apartment looking out over the canopy to the sea.

Read the age limits first. Two of these only take guests aged 12 and over, and it is not always obvious from the booking sites.

The eight, and who each one suits

Kimpton Grand Roatan: the best luxury resort on the island

West Bay Beach. 122 rooms, suites, bungalows and villa suites, four restaurants, an oceanfront infinity pool and a gym. It reopened as a Kimpton in October 2023 after a complete reworking of the old Grand Roatan resort, and it is, straightforwardly, the most polished resort on the island.

Part of that is the address. West Bay Beach is the stretch where the reef comes close enough to swim to from the sand, and being able to walk out of your room and snorkel it is a different trip from being driven to it. Part of it is scale done properly: four restaurants that are actually different from each other, villa suites with full kitchens for anyone staying longer, and the staffing depth a property this size can carry.

And then there is the spa, which is a reason to come in itself. Kao Kamasa was voted among the world's best destination spas in Condé Nast Traveler's 2025 Readers' Choice Awards, and the resort was voted among the top resorts in Central America in the same awards. Treatments draw on the traditions of the Pech, an indigenous people of north-eastern Honduras whose name the spa spells Pesh, and a sequence of soaking pools varies by temperature and salinity. We cover it properly here.

What reviewers love: the staff above all, snorkeling with plenty of fish straight off the beach, the breakfast spread and the spa. Snorkel gear is free, and the rooms guests rate highest are the Canopy View bungalows and the ocean-view kings with a private plunge pool.

Best for: anyone who wants the best version of a full-service resort, families who need the scale, and people for whom the spa is the trip.

Arihini by Fiechter: the view

West Bay Road, beside the lighthouse. The one property on this list that is technically not a hotel: architect-designed apartments, from private rooms to one, two and three-bedroom units with full kitchens and laundry, and a rooftop loft.

The view is the reason to come. The building sits at the top of West Bay hill, and units look out over the jungle canopy to the sea, an outlook nothing on the beach can offer, because on the beach you are looking at the beach. An elevator takes you up to the rooftop pool and lounge on the eighth floor, for sunsets and the cruise ships coming in. The buildings are properly modern and the units are genuinely spacious.

For a longer stay, or a group of six, the numbers work differently from a hotel: shop, cook, do your laundry, and put the whole family in one unit.

You will want a car. Up on the hill, the beach, the West End strip and the West Bay restaurants are a drive rather than a walk, so plan on renting a car or using taxis. Some restaurants, such as Azul, will arrange transport on request, the concierge can help with restaurant reservations, and on nights in you can order delivery.

What reviewers love: the views, at sunrise and sunset, especially from the 360-degree rooftop, and units that are spotless, modern and quiet. There is free secured parking, and West Bay is about five to seven minutes by car, West End about ten.

Best for: longer stays, families and groups, self-caterers, and anyone who would rather wake up to that view than to a lobby.

Ibagari: the boutique dive hotel

Tamarind Drive, between West Bay and West End. Fewer than twenty suites, a villa, and two private homes.

It holds One MICHELIN Key, and it is worth being clear about what that is. Keys are MICHELIN's award for hotels rather than restaurants, a separate scheme from stars, introduced in 2024, judging the place you sleep rather than the place you eat. So the Key is Ibagari's, not its restaurant's, and MICHELIN renewed it in 2026.

It is usually written up for the design: modernist interiors, suites built around mature trees, a real art collection rather than resort decor. That undersells it. Ibagari describes itself as a boutique dive resort, and the diving is not an amenity bolted on afterwards. Duna Divers runs from the property as a PADI center with a full course range and small groups, with specialty trips to Mary's Place, the Mr. Bud wreck and the Cayos Cochinos seamounts.

Luna Muna, the open-air restaurant, is one of the best dinners on the island and popular well beyond the hotel, so book it even as a guest. Guests can take out kayaks and paddleboards, there is a program of massage, yoga and other wellness sessions, and a hotel water taxi runs you to West Bay or West End in a few minutes: a quiet property and the village, without a car.

Before booking. Ibagari markets the hotel as an adults-only retreat, and its own site sets the minimum age at 12; the MICHELIN listing says under-18s cannot be accommodated, so confirm directly if it matters. Traveling with younger children? Ibagari Homes, its two private beachfront houses, welcome all ages. Ask about payment when you book, because its policies differ between the hotel and the homes.

It sits outside the West Bay beach resort area, which is exactly why it is so quiet. Pack insect repellent: the rooms are close to the sand, in a stretch with more sand flies than West Bay, and they are out at sunrise and sunset.

What reviewers love: staff who remember how you take your coffee by the second morning, the art and the calm, and a beach that feels private by West Bay standards. The Deluxe King Ocean View is the room guests rate highest.

Best for: divers who want comfort without a dive-camp feel, couples, and people who care what a room looks like.

Arca: the small one

The middle of West Bay Beach, reopened as Arca in December 2023 on the site of the old Island Pearl. Sixteen rooms across junior suites, luxury suites and villas, in earth tones and local materials. The luxury suites have private outdoor showers, and most rooms have a terrace or outdoor space.

Ahari is the beachfront restaurant, good enough that many guests barely look elsewhere, and there is a WhatsApp concierge. Guests must be 12 or over, which is how they keep it quiet: a boutique hotel in the literal sense rather than a resort with fewer rooms.

What reviewers love: the friendly staff, calm water and snorkeling right off the beach, rooms serviced daily, and live music at Ahari on some nights.

Best for: couples, honeymoons, solo travelers and remote workers.

Infinity Bay: the condo resort on the beach

West Bay Beach, steps from the sand with the reef in front. Condo-style suites from studios up to three bedrooms, kitchen-equipped, set around a long infinity pool with waterfalls and a jacuzzi. Tranquility Spa is on site, with massages on a catamaran when the sea is calm, and guests can use the Roatan Athletic Club gym. La Palapa is the beach bar and grill, there is room service, and an all-inclusive package is offered as an option.

What reviewers love: spotless grounds and pools, a breakfast buffet that changes every day, the swim-up bar and the free shuttle.

Best for: families and groups who want a kitchen and the beach at the same time, and anyone who wants a proper gym on the trip.

Mayan Princess: the family dive resort

West Bay Beach. Condo-style studios and one and two-bedroom villas, all with full kitchens, around a long lagoon pool with waterfalls. Mayan Divers runs from the property as a PADI five-star dive resort, and there is a kids' club for ages 4 to 12, a spa, and several restaurants and bars. It is sold all-inclusive in two tiers, so check which restaurants your plan covers; diving is booked separately.

What reviewers love: how clean everything is, from rooms to pools to sand, the clear water for snorkeling, and beachfront rooms with uninterrupted views. The airport shuttle is free.

Best for: families, divers, and anyone who wants all-inclusive right on West Bay Beach.

The Beach House: the West End one

A small boutique hotel on the beach at Half Moon Bay, with spacious suites and its own restaurant, Mila del Mar, upstairs looking out over Half Moon Bay. What it offers that the West Bay properties cannot is the village on your doorstep: dive shops, a dozen restaurants and the bars all within a short walk along the strip.

What reviewers love: staff who go the extra mile, down to decorating a room for a birthday, being able to walk to everything, and free bikes and paddleboards. All fourteen suites face the sea.

Best for: divers, people who would be bored by a resort, and anyone who wants to walk to dinner.

Paya Bay: the nature one

Out on the East End, a long drive from West Bay and a world away from it. A small resort on a bluff above the sea, set in tropical grounds with nature trails and two secluded half-moon beaches, with yoga, kayaking and the reef offshore. It is quiet, green and properly immersed in nature, and one of the most beautiful settings on the island.

Know this before you book: Paya Bay is partly clothing optional, so ask the resort if you have questions about this when booking your stay.

What reviewers love: the warm, family-run feel, with long-serving staff and plenty of repeat guests, quiet beaches you often have to yourself, the trails and the open-sided yoga pavilion over the water, and snorkel trips from the resort. Dive Roatan operates on site.

Best for: couples and nature lovers who want to get away from it all, and naturists.

How do you choose between them?

Three questions decide it. First, children: the Ibagari hotel and Arca both take guests 12 and over only, which leaves the Kimpton, Arihini, Infinity Bay, Mayan Princess, Ibagari Homes or the Beach House for younger families. Second, hotel or apartment: under a week, a hotel is usually the better experience; over a week, or with a group, a kitchen and a washing machine change the trip more than a concierge does, and Arihini, Infinity Bay and Mayan Princess all give you one. Third, whether you want to walk to dinner: you can from the Kimpton, Arca, Infinity Bay, Mayan Princess and the Beach House, Ibagari's water taxi takes care of it, and from Arihini or Paya Bay you will want a car.

West Bay or West End is the wider version of the same question.

Common questions about where to stay in Roatan

What is the best resort in Roatan?

The Kimpton Grand Roatan on West Bay Beach, which reopened as a Kimpton in October 2023 with 122 rooms, four restaurants, an oceanfront infinity pool and the Kao Kamasa spa. It was voted among the top resorts in Central America in Condé Nast Traveler's 2025 Readers' Choice Awards. For something smaller and quieter, Ibagari, which holds One MICHELIN Key, and Arca, a sixteen-room beach hotel for guests 12 and over, are the boutique alternatives.

Which Roatan hotels are adults-only or child-free?

Two of these keep children out. Arca accepts guests aged 12 and over. Ibagari markets its hotel as adults-only and sets the minimum age at 12 on its own site, though the MICHELIN listing says under-18s cannot stay, so confirm directly before booking. Families do better at the Kimpton Grand Roatan, the Arihini apartments, Infinity Bay, Mayan Princess, Ibagari Homes, which welcome all ages, or the Beach House in West End.

Is it better to stay in a hotel or a condo in Roatan?

For a stay under a week, a hotel usually gives the better vacation: restaurants, a beach and someone else doing the work. For longer stays, families or groups, a condo with a full kitchen, laundry and more space changes the trip more than a concierge does. Infinity Bay and Mayan Princess give you that on West Bay Beach; Arihini gives you more space and the view from the hill, where you will want a car to eat out.

Do you need a car if you stay in West Bay?

Not if you stay on West Bay Beach itself, where the Kimpton, Arca, Infinity Bay and Mayan Princess are: you can walk the beach to restaurants and take the water taxi to West End. Ibagari, between West Bay and West End, runs its own water taxi. At Arihini, up on West Bay hill by the lighthouse, plan on a car or taxis, and the same goes for Paya Bay out on the East End. The airport is roughly 25 to 30 minutes away by road, so arrange a transfer when you book.

When should you book luxury hotels in Roatan?

Early for high season, which runs roughly from December to April, and especially early for the small properties such as Arca and Ibagari, which have only a handful of rooms. Check what is included before you compare prices, because transfers, dive packages, meal plans and spa access vary a lot and change the real cost. Ask about payment too: some properties are cards only, while much of the island runs on cash.

What is the best luxury hotel in Roatan for couples or a honeymoon?

Ibagari, for design and quiet: a small, art-filled hotel for guests 12 and over, with the Luna Muna restaurant on site and its own water taxi to West Bay and West End. Arca is the barefoot alternative, sixteen rooms on the middle of West Bay Beach for guests 12 and over. If you want a full resort with a spa for the pair of you, the Kimpton Grand Roatan and its Kao Kamasa spa.

Which luxury hotel in Roatan is best for families?

The Kimpton Grand Roatan, for scale: four restaurants, an infinity pool, villa suites with kitchens and the reef a swim from the sand. Mayan Princess has a kids' club and villas with kitchens, sold all-inclusive, and Infinity Bay puts a family in a condo with a kitchen beside the beach. For longer stays or bigger groups, the Arihini apartments give you separate bedrooms, a kitchen and laundry. Ibagari Homes welcome all ages, unlike the main hotel.

How much do luxury hotels in Roatan cost?

Prices move a lot with the season and the room, so we do not quote nightly rates. What changes the real cost more than the headline price is what is included: airport transfers, dive packages, meal plans and spa access vary from one property to the next. Compare like with like for your dates on each property's own site, and expect the highest rates from December to April.
