Where are the gyms in West Bay?

Roatan Athletic Club at Infinity Bay

On West Bay Beach at Infinity Bay. Treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, weight machines, benches and free weights, plus personal training, changing rooms, showers and lockers. It is free for resort guests, and the resort's website says memberships are available to non-guests, which makes it a good option if you are staying elsewhere on West Bay. It is open daily, 6am to 6pm. Ask at the resort before you go.

Best for: anyone staying on West Bay who wants a full gym within walking distance.

Kimpton Grand Roatan

The Kimpton's fitness center has treadmills, ellipticals, a bike, a weights area and TRX, with personal training and classes such as HIIT and circuit training. It is for guests aged 18 and over. If you are not staying, the resort's day-use room offer and its Kao Kamasa Spa Pass both include access to the fitness center.

Best for: a full gym plus the spa pools in one visit.

Where else can you train in Roatan?

In Sandy Bay, Anthony's Key Resort has an air-conditioned gym beside the pool for its guests, along with a yoga deck.

For CrossFit-style training, DanaSore CrossPhit runs cross-training sessions on the island. It is not an affiliated CrossFit box, and it is best to get in touch with the group directly, through its Facebook page, for times and locations.

What can you do without a gym in Roatan?

Swim. Half Moon Bay and West Bay are both used for sea swimming, and a swim along the shore is one of the best things you can do here before breakfast. Watch for boat traffic in both bays and stay close to the beach.

Run with Reef Runners. Roatan's running group meets every Sunday at 4:45am, starting from a different point on the island each week. Find this week's start on its website. Cycling groups ride the island's roads from time to time too, so ask around if you want to join one.

Climb Carambola. Carambola Botanical Gardens in Sandy Bay has trails up through the gardens to a viewing deck at the top of Carambola Mountain, about a twenty-minute climb by the gardens' own estimate. There is an entry fee.

Dive and snorkel. A week of finning against a current is more exercise than most people expect.

When is the best time to exercise in Roatan?

Early morning. Roatan is hot and humid all year, and by late morning an outdoor workout is hard going. Train at dawn, or indoors later in the day, and drink more water than you think you need. Bottled or filtered water is the norm on the island.
