Where can you do yoga in Roatan?

Most of the island's public classes are in West End. Sun Yoga runs a class every morning at 9am on the top deck of Sundowners, over Half Moon Bay. Posada Las Orquídeas holds yoga on its dock over the water on Monday and Thursday afternoons. Cocoon Wellness Studio in Coconut Tree Plaza is the indoor studio and the place for aerial yoga. In West Bay, the Kimpton Grand Roatan runs classes three mornings a week, and in Sandy Bay, Tranquilseas and Anthony's Key Resort both have yoga spaces of their own.

Mornings are when most people practice, because by late morning you would be in full sun. The West End classes are genuinely different from one another: an open deck, a dock and an indoor studio.

Where can you do yoga in West End?

Sun Yoga at Sundowners

The top floor of Sundowners, the beach bar at Half Moon Bay, on an open wooden deck looking straight out over the water. The studio lists a class every morning at 9am, with a rotating cast of teachers, so the style changes through the week: vinyasa and island flow, power and yin, and a yin class with live sound healing. All levels are welcome, drop-ins are welcome and mats are available. The schedule is on its website, with week-to-week changes posted on Instagram.

What it costs: Sun Yoga's website lists a drop-in at around $10 to $12, with cheaper rates on packs of three, five and ten classes. Check the current price when you go.

Our take: the setting is the reason. A morning breeze off Half Moon Bay and the water below the deck. It began as the world was shutting down during the pandemic and grew into a community rather than a class, which you notice.

On the dock at Posada Las Orquídeas

Behind Café de Palo on West End Road. The café belongs to the hotel, and the yoga happens on its pier over the water: classes on Monday and Thursday at 4:30pm, plus occasional pop-up sessions. Beginners and experienced students are both welcome. Everywhere else in West End practices on a deck looking at the sea; this one is on it.

Our take: the quietest of the West End classes, and the one for an afternoon. The property is set back off the strip in a garden full of orchid-covered trees, which is where the name comes from, and it is noticeably calmer than the middle of West End.

Cocoon Wellness Studio

On the second floor of Coconut Tree Plaza in West End. Aerial yoga in silks, plus mat yoga, barre and Zumba, indoors rather than on an open deck, which some days is exactly what you want. Beginners are welcome. Classes are booked and paid for on the studio's website, which lists aerial classes at $22 and mat yoga at $15.

Our take: the aerial classes are the reason to come. Hanging in fabric changes the practice, which is the point.

Where can you do yoga in West Bay and Sandy Bay?

Kimpton Grand Roatan, West Bay. The resort publishes hatha yoga on Tuesday and Saturday and somatic yoga on Thursday, all from 8:30am to 9:30am in its Orquidea Ballroom. No reservation is needed for hatha; guests bring the mat from their room. The resort also runs occasional wellness workshops, such as sound baths and laughing yoga, without a fixed schedule. If you are not staying there, ask the spa's wellness concierge whether you can join a class.

Tranquilseas, Sandy Bay. Group and private yoga on the open-air top floor of the main building, looking out to sea. Ask reception for the current schedule.

Anthony's Key Resort, Sandy Bay. Weekly classes led by an instructor on the resort's dedicated yoga deck, set up for guests.

What should you bring to yoga in Roatan?

Water, and expect to sweat: even an early class outdoors is warm. Bring repellent for anything outdoors at dawn or dusk, when the sand flies are out. Small bills are handy for drop-in fees. Sun Yoga has mats, but bring your own if you are particular.
