Where is the best spa in Roatan?

Kao Kamasa at the Kimpton Grand Roatan on West Bay Beach is the island's showpiece spa, ranked in Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice list of destination spas, with treatments inspired by Pech traditions and a set of hydrotherapy pools you can use with a treatment or a day spa pass. For a good massage on the beach without the ceremony, Tranquility Spa at Infinity Bay, which also offers massages on a catamaran. For a half day in a garden by the sea in Sandy Bay, Spa Baan Suerte. And in West End, the well-regarded Island Massage School clinic is the place for a straightforward massage.

Which spas in Roatan are worth booking?

Kao Kamasa at the Kimpton Grand Roatan, West Bay

The resort lists Kao Kamasa in Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice ranking of the world's destination spas, which is a remarkable thing to find on a small Caribbean island. It sits on West Bay Beach within the Kimpton Grand Roatan.

The treatments are inspired by the traditions of the Pech, an indigenous people of north-eastern Honduras, whose name the spa spells Pesh. The signature treatments include the Pesh Obsidian Palm Stone Ritual, a two-hour treatment of exfoliation, body masks, a warm-water rinse and massage, alongside the Painted Jade Restorative Facial and the Temazcal Patokaa rituals.

The part people talk about afterwards is the water. The Tamanka pools vary by temperature and salinity, and you rotate through them before or after your time on the table. There are hot tubs, cold plunge pools and relaxation lounges, and outside, a cliffside garden pool above the sea.

You do not have to book a treatment to use them. The resort sells a Kao Kamasa Spa Pass, including to visitors who are not staying at the hotel, which covers the pools, lounges and fitness center. It is for adults aged 18 and over. That makes it a good option for a day out from a cruise ship, too.

What it costs. This is the top end of the island. When we checked the spa's booking system, a 60-minute massage was listed from $165 before tax. The spa adds a 10% gratuity and 15% tax to all services automatically, so factor that in rather than tipping on top. When we last booked a full ritual with extras, the total came to around $430.

Best for: an occasion, and a long afternoon in the pools.

Tranquility Spa at Infinity Bay, West Bay

On West Bay Beach at Infinity Bay, and a long-standing name on the island: massage, facials, salt scrubs and nails.

The unusual bit: massages on a catamaran, weather permitting. It sounds like a gimmick and is not, provided the sea is behaving, so check conditions before you book it. Phones are not allowed inside the spa, which tells you the room they are trying to run.

Best for: a massage with the beach on the doorstep.

Serenity Day Spa at West Bay Lodge, West Bay

A smaller, low-key spa at West Bay Lodge, with massage, body treatments, facials and nails.

Best for: a quiet, simple treatment on West Bay.

Spa Baan Suerte, Sandy Bay

A garden-and-beachfront day spa on Baan Suerte Road in Sandy Bay, with massage, body treatments and packages. It is set up for an afternoon rather than an hour: the day spa package sold through tour operators adds the pool, the jacuzzi and paddleboards, plus a hotel pickup that solves the transport problem. Check what your booking includes when you reserve.

Best for: a half day out away from the busier beaches.

Island Massage School clinic, West End

In the building with the enormous turtle on the roof: you will know it when you see it. It is a massage school and clinic rather than a resort spa, with no pools or ceremony, just a well-regarded massage room. The school recommends booking at least two days ahead.

Best for: a good massage in West End without the resort price.

Can you get a massage in your hotel room in Roatan?

Yes. Mobile massage therapists will come to you, and many hotels and rental hosts can arrange one. It is often the best option for couples, and after a long dive day it beats getting in a taxi. We can also arrange one for you through a therapist we know and trust: get in touch and tell us where you are staying and when.

Which spa should you choose?

For an occasion, Kao Kamasa: budget properly, and buy the spa pass or book a treatment and give yourself time in the pools. For a massage on the beach, Tranquility, or its catamaran if the water is flat. For a half day out in Sandy Bay, Spa Baan Suerte. For a good massage in West End without the resort price, the Island Massage School clinic.

Common questions about spas in Roatan

Can non-guests use the spa at the Kimpton Grand Roatan?

Yes. Kao Kamasa takes treatment bookings from people who are not staying at the resort, and the Kimpton also sells a Kao Kamasa Spa Pass to visitors without a hotel reservation. The pass covers the Tamanka pools, hot tubs, cold plunge, relaxation lounges, the cliffside garden pool and the fitness center, and it is for adults 18 and over. Book ahead, especially in high season and on cruise days.

How much is a massage in Roatan?

It depends on where. At Kao Kamasa, the Kimpton's spa, a 60-minute massage was listed from $165 before tax when we checked, and the spa adds a 10% gratuity and 15% tax automatically. Independent spas and the Island Massage School clinic in West End cost considerably less. Wherever you go, ask whether service is already included before you tip, and confirm the current price when you book.

Is there a spa for cruise passengers in Roatan?

Yes. Kao Kamasa at the Kimpton Grand Roatan on West Bay Beach takes non-guests for treatments and sells a day spa pass for adults 18 and over, so it works for a cruise day. Tranquility Spa at Infinity Bay, also on West Bay Beach, is a simpler alternative with the beach on the doorstep. Allow time for the drive from the cruise port to West Bay, and book before you arrive.

Should you get a massage after diving?

Leave a gap. Divers Alert Network suggests avoiding deep tissue massage straight after diving, mainly because the muscle soreness it causes can be confused with symptoms of decompression sickness. Book your massage for a non-diving day, or keep it gentle after a morning dive, and tell the therapist if you have been diving. The same goes for sunburn: book the massage before you catch too much sun.
